Professor
and musicologist, Javier Suárez Pajares is the author of
a splendid book of research and documentation, an illustrated life
history of Joaquín Rodrigo and his world. The life of the Maestro,
which spanned almost the entire twentieth century, and was rich
in musical production, events, friendships and personal experiences,
is reflected in great detail in this book, thanks to the colaboration
of Sociedad General de Autores y Editores and Fundación Autor, and
the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports, through its National
Art Institute of Theater and Music.
This
beautiful bilingual (Spanish/English) publication, which contains
photographs dating from his childhood and youth up until his final
days, examines the life of the great composer in the following stages:
"Childhood and Youth (1901-1922)", "Formative Years-Years of Struggle
1923-1939)", "Years of Triumph 1940-1950)", "Maestro Rodrigo (1951-1961)",
"Tributes and Recognition (1962-1988)", "Retirement and Family (1989-1999)".
It
is, in short, the history of culture in the twentieth century that
is portrayed in this book, as illustrated in press articles, concert
programs, caricatures published in the press, and photographs with
prominent figures from every field of the times. The reader is taken
into the intimacy of Rodrigo's family life and home, his long period
of University activity at the Manuel de Falla Chair of the University
of Madrid, and his travels to attend premieres and tributes throughout
the world.
"(…)
The book opens with an image of Rodrigo as a plump baby, hailing
from a family of landowners from Sagunto, who survived a terrible
diphteria epidemic. Further on, with that look which transcends
the merely superficial, important details relating to his large
family can be seen, such as the fondness between siblings and the
absence of his father, something clearly visible in these photos,
in which he is captured at a distance from the family environment,
reading the newspaper. Rodrigo is subsequently depicted as a carefree
student in fashionable Paris, a young man in love, with the excitement
of his first premières, as well as the desolation of his most bitter
moments. (…)"
