An Evening of Magic in Paris
Tribute to Joaquín Rodrigo at UNESCO headquarters

The composer Joaquín Rodrigo was honored in Paris on March 26, at the headquarters of UNESCO in a concert performed by the Joaquín Rodrigo Orchestra, the guitarist José María Gallardo and the flutist Bernard Wystraëte. This tribute to Rodrigo, with the Spanish Royal Family represented by the Infanta Cristina , marks UNESCO's celebration of the Rodrigo Centenary Year , following their declaration of Joaquín Rodrigo as a "figure to be comemmorated in 2001 for his contribution to the cultural legacy of mankind".

The Joaquín Rodrigo Orchestra was warmly applauded. They charmed the audience with a magnificent program of Rodrigo's works, featuring Zarabanda lejana y villancico, Cançoneta, Dos miniaturas andaluzas (composed in Paris but not premiered until last year ), Aria antigua, Tres viejos aires de danza, Soleriana, and with the Fantasía para un gentilhombre, masterfully performed by José María Gallardo.

Paris was especially significant in Joaquín Rodrigo's life, both personally and professionally. Rodrigo lived in Paris at the end of the twenties, and three of his encounters there fundamentally influenced the course of his life. He met and studied with his maestro, Paul Dukas, he met the Spanish composer whom he most admired and whose friendship was later to be of great benefit, Manuel de Falla, and he met and fell in love with Victoria Kamhi, who became his wife and closest collaborator. It was in Paris where Joaquín Rodrigo composed the work which would bring him universal fame, his Concierto de Aranjuez, with a combination of guitar and orchestra that was an innovation at the time.
